Why, Hello, 2012, what big teeth you have

Happy New Year, Dearies, only a few days late. Tired yet of crafting resolutions? As I pick my way through abandoned exercise plans and over ambitious word count goals, I reflect again on the inevitability of broken resolutions. Life gets in the way of our best laid plans. It’s the way the universe tests us to see how bad we want whatever goal we’ve held aloft. The new year gives us an excuse to start fresh; it is the first day of the rest of your life. But EVERY day is the first day of the rest of your life. You failed your goal already? Start again tomorrow.

“Successful writers show up at the blank page. Ask any of them and they’ll tell you that most days, they come nowhere near perfection. What makes them winners is not instant excellence but the sheer dumb repetition of showing up.” – Martha Beck in Opera Magazine, quoted by Susan Elizabeth Phillips at a workshop at 2008 RWA Conference, and now repeated to myself on a daily basis

I’ve set myself some general goals for 2012, and I’m pretty motivated to carry them out. 2012 is a big year for me: First book, Big Birthday, fabulous 6 week trip across Europe. Unfortunately, the book debuts three weeks after I hit the Big Birthday. The short story, Hearts of Fire, might hit the deadline in time. I don’t know. When I was a kid (12 or so) I wrote down a goal to publish a book before I hit thirty, sealed it with wax, and locked it in a memory box. The road to attainment was not straight. I abandoned the path many times. It lay like a forgotten deer track across my subconscious, overgrown with weeds and briars, waiting for the day when I would return to my sanity and abandon my pursuit of other people’s dreams. Law school. Business School. Blah blah blah.

Anyway, let’s raise a toast to an awesome 2012!! My resolutions and goals:

  • Resolution: I resolve to prioritize good health.
  • Goal: Get my wrist fixed. (Surgery on Friday!)
  • Goal: Make exercise a part of my daily routine. Run 3x a week. Yoga other days (once wrist is fixed).
  • Resolution: I resolve to make better use of my time, to honor it as the gift it is and be mindful of each moment.
  • Goal: Write or read when I have free time, not dick about on the internet.
  • Goal: Write book 3 and start on a new series.

The Mayan Apocalypse is set to occur in December, so maybe with the extra interest in apocalyptic predictions there will be extra interest in the Deadglass Trilogy? It could be an excellent year to have an apocalyptic debut novel.

I’m also planning out the awesome sabbatical in Europe which may involve kilts, trains, and Swiss Chalets. Stay tuned!

Do you make resolutions? Do you have a bucket list?
